Guidance for Startups from Investor and Venture Capital Spokes

At the Investor Catalyst Hub’s May member meeting, a panel of representatives from investor and venture capital spoke organizations shared guidance for university startups on pitching to investors, the most pressing areas of bioscience investment today, and their frameworks to inform investment decisions. Read below for a sample of their expertise and sign in to the member portal to view the recording in full.

  • Maria D. Toler from SteelSky Ventures encouraged startups to do their research: “Understand the landscape of investors, and which investors you need to approach at the right time.”
  • Erich Scheller with RA Capital Management broke down what he wants to hear in a pitch: “What’s the unmet need you’re trying to solve, how much do you need to raise, how long is it going to last, and what are you going to do between now and then?”
  • Erin Siestra says Hopelab is “looking for early evidence that [the idea] works and that people will pay for it—those two pieces need to be in place for us to say they’re on a path to product-market fit.”
  • On digital health innovations made at institutions to solve problems in a care model, Brian Zuercher from 1870 Ventures said, “Any time an institution can leverage the validation point plus the potential customer point, you’re going to accelerate the commercial opportunity exponentially.”
